Talking therapies for children & young people (11+)

for talking therapies for adults please see our adults services

What are talking therapies?

Talking to a skilled professional helps you to make sense of emotional distress and resolve complicated feelings or find ways to live with them. It can also help you to recognise unhelpful patterns in the way you think and act and find ways to change them.

There are many different kinds of talking therapy, all of which involve working with a trained therapist either face to face, on the phone or in an online meeting. The most widely known talking therapy is called counselling, but you may also have heard of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT). When you work with a therapist as a young person, your therapist may suggest different ways for you to share your feelings such as through art or music if you are struggling to talk to them.

Therapists who will work with you are qualified to do so as they have completed specialist training and have worked with other children & young people. During therapy sessions, the therapist will listen to you without judging you and help you find your own way through your challenges. The therapy space is a safe space for you to talk, cry, shout or think and is a place where you can look at your problems in different ways with someone who respects you.

For parents

Our children and young peoples talking therapies cost £45 per session and come with the assurance that the professional your child works with has been approved and vetted by Doncaster Mind. By choosing our service you are positively impacting your child's life AND someone elses. Each session that you pay for contributes to Doncaster Mind providing a free counselling service for adults in our community who need it. Our free adult counselling service is delivered by students on placement with us who are training for a career in talking therapy and are supported and supervised by qualified therapists. We hope to be able to offer free counselling for children & young people in the near future.

For general information about talking therapy for children and young people, there are some excellent reads on the Young Minds website.
