World Mental Health Day 2026

Real Voices. Real Change.

Sometimes the most powerful thing we can do is listen.

This World Mental Health Day, we've invited people from across our community to share something of their own experience. Not polished stories. Not expert opinions. Just real people reflecting on what they've learned, what has helped, and what they wish they'd known earlier.

Every voice on this page belongs to someone with their own journey. Some stories are hopeful. Some are challenging. All of them remind us that mental health is something that touches all of us in different ways.

Take a moment, put the kettle on, and have a listen.

Listen to the Stories

Each recording is a few minutes long and recorded in the speaker's own words.

Story 1: Summer's Voice

Story 2: Peter's Voice

Story 3: Donna's Voice

Before Things Break

Before things Break homepage banner (1)At Doncaster Mind, we often meet people who tell us the same thing: "I wish I'd spoken to someone sooner."

Mental health challenges rarely appear overnight. They often build gradually through stress, loneliness, worry, grief, financial pressures, relationship difficulties or simply trying to cope with too much for too long.

That truth sits at the heart of our Before Things Break campaign.

We believe people shouldn't have to wait until a crisis before finding support. By listening to these stories, we hope more people recognise themselves in someone else's experience, realise they are not alone, and feel able to reach out before things become overwhelming.

Every story shared here is a reminder that support matters, conversations matter, and small moments of connection can make a real difference.

What We've Learned from Listening

These recordings are all different, but some common themes emerge

  • Mental health struggles can affect anyone
  • Asking for help is often harder than people expect
  • Recovery isn't always a straight line
  • Small acts of kindness and connection matter
  • Speaking openly can help others feel less alone
  • Most importantly, every person's experience is unique
  • There is no single story of mental health

If Something Here Resonates With You

If you've listened to these stories and recognised some of your own experiences, you're not alone. Whether you need practical support, someone to talk to, or simply help understanding what options are available, we're here to help.
