Before Things Break: Why Acting Early Matters More Than Ever

At Doncaster Mind, supporting people before challenges escalate has always been part of what we do. However, over recent years we've seen increasing evidence that the circumstances affecting people's mental health are becoming more complex, reinforcing the need to focus on support much earlier.

Many people coming to us are not simply experiencing mental ill health. More often, they’re managing a combination of circumstances that have built up over time - financial pressures, physical health issues, housing concerns, relationship difficulties, social isolation, workplace stress, caring responsibilities, or uncertainty about the future. Mental health is often intertwined with these experiences rather than existing separately from them.

As these challenges accumulate, they become increasingly connected. What may begin as a manageable difficulty can affect many areas of a person's life and wellbeing if left unaddressed. By the time someone reaches out for support, it can take longer to untangle the complexities surrounding their situation before we’re able to fully address the impact on their mental health.

This has strengthened our belief in the importance of early support. Acting earlier can help prevent challenges from escalating, reduce the likelihood of people becoming overwhelmed by multiple difficulties at the same time, and improve the chances of achieving positive long-term outcomes.

It has also reinforced something else we have learned over our 47 years of supporting people across Doncaster: no single organisation can meet every need alone.

Whilst mental health is our area of expertise, supporting the whole person often requires a broader network of support. Increasingly, we are working alongside community groups, voluntary organisations, schools, employers and specialist services to ensure people can access practical help as well as mental health support. By connecting people with the right support at the right time, we can achieve far more together than any organisation can achieve alone.

This thinking is shaping the future direction of Doncaster Mind. We’re developing clearer pathways across our services to help people access support that reflects both their needs and circumstances. Whether someone needs practical guidance, emotional support, therapy, mentoring, coaching or help navigating multiple challenges, we’re developing a more connected and responsive experience.

It is also shaping how we work with organisations and communities. Through initiatives such as our Before Things Break campaign, our mental fitness training programme, and our work with schools and employers, we are encouraging earlier conversations, building confidence and helping people recognise challenges before they escalate.

Recognising these changing needs has also challenged us to think differently about how support is accessed and sustained. If we’re serious about helping people earlier, we need services that are flexible, accessible and able to respond before difficulties reach crisis point.

This thinking has informed the development of Rise, our dedicated therapy and workforce support service. Rise enables us to extend access to local, face-to-face support for individuals and organisations whilst complementing the wider work of Doncaster Mind. It allows us to support people at different stages of their journey, whether they are looking for preventative support, workplace wellbeing provision or more focused therapeutic intervention.

Importantly, Rise is not separate from our mission. It is part of a wider commitment to ensuring that people can access support earlier and through multiple routes. It also helps create sustainable income that can be reinvested into our charitable services, strengthening our ability to support people across Doncaster who may otherwise struggle to access help.

Ultimately, our focus on early support is about recognising that mental health does not exist in isolation. People's wellbeing is shaped by the circumstances they face, the support available around them and how quickly they can access help when challenges emerge. By combining mental health expertise, strong community partnerships, clearer pathways and innovative services, we aim to help more people access the right support at the right time. Because acting early changes what happens next.

How we’re responding:

  • Developing clearer support pathways
  • Strengthening partnerships across Doncaster
  • Launching our Before Things Break campaign
  • Supporting organisations through training and workforce support
  • Expanding access to therapy through Rise
