Physical Activities

Could being more active help you feel better?

pexels-airfit-6150627We have launched a new type of support that connects physical activity with mental wellbeing, we often think about physical health and mental health as two separate things. In reality, they are closely connected.

When we're struggling with our mental health, things like getting out of the house, moving around, sleeping well or seeing other people can become more difficult. And when we're less active and more isolated, this can sometimes affect how we feel.

From 10th August, Doncaster Mind is introducing a new way of exploring this connection as part of our support for people experiencing mental health difficulties. The approach recognises that physical activity can be one part of improving wellbeing. But it isn't about simply sending people off to an activity. When someone gets in touch, we'll take time to understand what is happening for them, what they would like to change and what might help. This includes looking at their mental and emotional wellbeing alongside other areas that can affect how they feel, including physical wellbeing, relationships, social connection, practical circumstances and access to support.

For some people, physical activity may be part of the answer. That could mean becoming more active, getting outside more, rebuilding confidence, developing a routine, meeting other people or returning to something they used to enjoy. And it doesn't mean joining a gym or taking part in organised sport.

Finding something that's right for you

asics-logo-png_seeklogo-11909Thanks to funding from ASICS, we are able to offer some physical activity opportunities directly, including yoga, non-competitive football and running.

We also work with organisations across Doncaster that offer a much wider range of physical activities, so we can help people explore options that fit their interests, circumstances and goals.

The important thing is that we don't start with the activity. We start with the person.

If someone is interested in becoming more active, we'll explore what they would like to get from it and what might make participation easier. For one person that might be a gentle activity to build confidence; for another it might be something social, outdoors, structured or simply something they used to enjoy. For some people, the most appropriate support may be physical activity. For others, it may be mental health support, community connection, practical help or a combination of different approaches.

Could this be right for you?

You don't need to consider yourself an ‘exercise person’.

Perhaps you've become less active because your mental health has deteriorated. Maybe you're spending more time at home, feeling isolated, lacking confidence or struggling with energy and motivation. Or perhaps you used to be active but have lost your routine and don't know how to start again.

You can get in touch with Doncaster Mind to talk about what's happening and explore whether physical activity could form part of the support that's right for you. Start with a conversation, not a commitment.

Physical activity is not a replacement for professional medical or mental health treatment. Where appropriate, we will help people access the right support for their individual circumstances.
