World Suicide Prevention Day

What is World Suicide Prevention day? world_suicide_prevention_day

World suicide prevention day occurs on the 10th September each year and is an world wide recognised day where communities and organisations come together to raise awareness and take meaningful steps towards preventing suicide and supporting those within our communities who may be struggling.

This year we are wanting to help start those important conversations that can help more than we realise, by sharing 5 ways you can start a conversation when you are worried about someone.

Because acting early can change what happens next.

5 Ways to start a conversation when you are worried about someone

Check in

If someone doesn't seem quite themselves, reach out. A simple "How are you?" or "I've been thinking about you" can make a real difference. You don't need the perfect words. The important thing is letting them know someone cares.

Listen

When someone opens up, focus on listening rather than finding answers. Giving someone space to talk and feel heard can be one of the most helpful things you do.

Stay curious

Many people say they're "fine" even when they're struggling. If you're concerned, gently ask another question and show interest in how they're really feeling.

Avoid trying to fix everything

It's natural to want to solve problems, but people often need understanding before advice. You don't need to have all the answers. Simply being there can help.

Help Them Connect with Support

You don't have to support someone on your own (link to information & urgent support web page) Encourage them to reach out for help and, if appropriate, offer to take that first step with them.

Starting a conversation won't solve everything, but it can be the first step towards support.

You don't need to wait until someone reaches crisis point.
